Sadly we lost our Poule Noir (our pet chicken) this week. I was lucky enough to spend her last hours with her, giving her her beloved spa treatment and blow dry of feathers, late raspberries (her favourite) from the garden and lots and lots of cuddles. She slid into her final sleep peacefully and in my arms.
Many will find it strange that a chicken could stir the heart, and I would have agreed even 6 months ago. Her disability meant looking after her more often than not, more so as the weather turned colder. In exchange she taught me that chickens purr in happiness, adore snuggling and show love by hugging. I would never have known such a unique love but for Poule. My office is a lonelier place without her presence.
